Makiki, situated at the base of Mt Tantalas and Punchbowl Valley is just 2 miles from downtown Honolulu. A switchback road cuts its way through the lush forest reserve land of the Makiki Valley to the top of Mt Tantalus which offers the some of the best views of Honolulu, complete with a panoramic backdrop of the pacific ocean and Diamond Head. Just to the north of Makiki, you'll find Punchbowl Valley, a bowllike extinct volcanic crater which is the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, for those killed in World War II.
Makiki is a local favorite as it is far enough removed from the tourist areas of Waikiki and the hustle and bustle of downtown to give peace and quiet, yet it is still just a 5 minute drive to either the heart of Honolulu or the tropical forests of Mt Tantalas.
